The Home Depot is to Macho Guy as the Godiva Chocolate Shop is to me—a candy store. He walks through that big ol’ box store salivating over tools, lumber, and plumbing devices the same way I drool over dark chocolate truffles. The female do-it-yourselfers stride down Home Depot aisles with a sense of purpose. The male do-it-yourselfers stroll down Home Depot aisles with stars in their eyes. I suspect worshipping construction supplies is a guy thing.

Nothing pleases MG more than dragging me through Home Depot, with the occasional side trip to other big box stores such as Lowes and Menards. Visiting these shrines to do-it-yourself home improvement bores me no end, mainly because I have no dark chocolate truffles to show for that time suck when we pass through the exit doors. Now, if big box stores gave out free chocolate truffles at the door to the hapless wives of would-be Bob Vilas, I’d still wish I were somewhere else but I’d be a lot happier about being bored.

So it was with some trepidation that I listened to MG announce that he had a home improvement project in mind. Every married woman knows that such a project is yet another skirmish in the battle of the sexes. MG’s announcement was a call to arms, his taste vs. mine. I girded myself for war.

Thank you, Jolana, for having me here today at Serious Whimsy. It’s always a fun blog to read, and I’m pleased to be able to talk about my latest release, Taking Risks, my third collection of short stories available on Amazon Kindle. Most of the stories were published previously (many years ago!) in Woman’s World magazine, but some of them are new. This collection includes four stories: “Tears of a Clown,” “Someday Soon,” “On Wings of Love,” and “Sweet Music Man.”

It happens every time we come home from an extended winter stay in Florida. We unload our Chevy Traverse, trudging in from the garage with bin after bin of kitchen and bath supplies that we used in the rental cottage, plus coats and luggage, plus golf clubs, plus computer, electronics and office equipment, plus Schnoodle Dog’s crate, his beds, his blankets, his toys, his wardrobe, his accessories, his dinnerware, his food, his meds, and his treats. Whew!

Years ago, I dreaded the approach of April Fool’s Day much more than I do nowadays. Why, you may ask? Was I not a good sport in the past? Yes, I was. I had to be.

Back then at age twenty-one, I was a teeny weeny bit naive. Um, maybe I should say very naive. Oh, all right, I was more than very naive; I was extraordinarily gullible, and so I was easily taken in by April Fool’s Day pranks.

It’s almost a given that at one point in a child’s life he—or she—will attempt to run away from home. I’m not talking teenage runaways. I have the younger kids in mind. Their efforts to escape the tyranny of mean old mom and dad are usually fraught with humor of the unintentional kind.

03-25-15 Runaway 1

Our younger son recently reported, between guffaws, his ten-year-old daughter’s abortive flight from her gilded cage and from the meanest parents in the whole wide world. Her plan was not well thought out. In her haste, she chose to bolt in the midst of Michigan’s harsh winter. Continue reading »
