Jolana Malkston 4It happened gradually, this addiction to crossword puzzles. It sneaked up on me while I was unaware. Before I knew it, I was hooked.

I suppose the seeds of my addiction were planted subconsciously as I listened to New York Times puzzle master Will Shortz and his word games on NPR every Sunday morning while I got ready for church. I played along and didn’t do half-badly. I didn’t do half-goodly either, but I did enjoy it. Boredom and the preservation of sanity proved to be the fertilizer that helped to grow the addiction to full flowering.

Jolana Malkston 4I confess. I loved school as a kid, but I wasn’t one of those suck up, teacher’s pet, brown nose types. No way. I was just insatiably curious and still am. I love to learn new things.

Unfortunately, the knowledge I retain leans heavily toward the offbeat and trivial. For example:

Trivia 1

The computers used to send Apollo astronauts to the moon were no more powerful than a cell phone. I wonder if we could send astronauts to Mars with a smart phone? Continue reading »

Jolana Malkston 4Hey, doesn’t that sound like a great title for an adventure story? Well, don’t get too excited. This isn’t an adventure story. Not that kind, anyway. This story is an adventure in shopping. Yes, I know. It’s my least favorite thing to do, but bear with me.

The Ninja in question isn’t a legendary Japanese warrior. It’s my new small kitchen appliance. Macho Guy refers to it as my new toy. He bought it for me after he bought himself an old boy toy—a Mustang GT convertible. I suppose, according to male logic, he believed that evened the score.

On a visit to Firstborn and his family, I admired the Ninja 3-in-1 Cooking System our DIL used to cook several meals. Actually, I suppose it was more like I drooled at the sight of it. All right, I’ll be honest with you. I outright coveted that Ninja 3-in-1 Cooking System. (I hope that doesn’t mean I have to go to confession.) My hopes of acquiring one were dashed, however, when I discovered the Ninja 3-in-1 cost $159.99.

[Now, is there anyone out there who thinks pricing an item at $159.99 convinces a customer that he is saving a bundle by not paying $160.00 for it? But I digress.] Continue reading »

Jolana Malkston 4I had wireless network issues that I could not resolve on my own, but that didn’t stop me from trying—and trying and trying and trying. I put off contacting The Geek Squad for the better part of two weeks. I waited that long because I have a hesitation problem.

The root of my hesitation problem is a little voice in my head that says: “You don’t have to waste money hiring someone to do this; you can manage by yourself if you try hard enough.” At other times, the niggling little voice says: “Are you sure you’re right about that?”

That little voice in my head is my late mother’s voice, intoned to evoke endless guilt, which did not pass over to the other side when she did. Instead, it took up residence in my subconscious where its main function is to promote doubt, waffling, and self-loathing should I ever decide something in my own self-interest.

One memorable time when I heard this voice, Mom was alive then and chastising me for selfishly thinking of hiring a part-time cleaning lady to help out after we enlarged our small raised ranch home with a sizable two-story addition. I was tempted to remind her that she had help cleaning her apartment—two young daughters that she pressed into service and paid them deep, deep, deeply below minimum wage—but that would have opened another can of guilt.
